Sara was walking back towards her house after kayaking in the river. The water was cold, and she wished Alec was there to fight away the chill for her. He loved her hugs the best. She felt safe with him. s she opened the door, she heard a familiar voice talking in her ear. "Sara," it whispered. She turned around and their was her boyfriend with a big grin spread across his face. " Don't scare me again!" she yelled, then silently she said, " I love you!" The moment it was out she thought: Oh no, what have I done, should I have said that yet?! What if he's not ready to know how I feel for him. She panicked thinking, he'd leave her. She couldn't bear the thought running around in her head. " I'm sorry," Sara said. Alec frowned, "Don't feel sorry for admitting your feelings, Sara. Don't ever feel sorry!" She sighed. Was he going to tell her how he felt. Waiting was misery! She looked scared for the answer. He kissed her on her brow. "I love you too," Alec said, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. She felt better after that. They watched a movie he brought over, not remembering the plot when it ended. They were gazing across the couch at each other with awe. Her mom broke the silence when she walked by, " Alec, Do you have to be home soon, or do you want to stay a bit longer?" Sara wished her mom hadn't seen their intense non-verbal communication. " I think my mom wouldn't mind staying an extra hour, do you?" Alec blushed. "No of coarse not, Alec, we like having you around, but not as much as Sara!" Her mom burst into a fit of laughter. OK, now Sara was mortified! " Mom!" Sara said, calling out to her," Why don't you check on Dad, I think he's outside washing the car." She nodded and left them alone. "Alec, what do you see in me?" He breathed heavily, saying, " I see a fun-loving, smart, pretty, and one-of-a-kind girl that I love." Then he said, " I want to come over tomorrow. Is that OK? Maybe we can go to the park and watch the ducks. My father always took me there, before he passed away. I wish he could have met you." Sara nodded, " That would be great, Alec. I'm sorry you miss him. I know how you feel. I lost my grandmother and it hurts me still." Alec pulled her close and held her tight for a few moments. She thought she could hear his heart beating in his chest. THUMP...THUMP...THUMP...
The next day Alec didn't show which was odd behavior on his part. The night before had been so sweet just being in his presence. Every time had actually. She almost dialed his number, but ended it, knowing he'd be the one to call her. She missed him, still. By lunch time he hadn't left her any messages. She was definitely worried. Her mom asked her, "Is everything alright?" Sara didn't answer; she didn't know. Around dinner time a phone call came through from Alec's mom, not Alec. He had been in a car accident on the way, and was in the hospital. Sara asked how he was doing, and if she could go see him. His mom said visitors weren't allowed right now. Sara's mom saw the look on her face, and took the phone from her, nodding at the news his mom was telling her. She was quiet when she hung up. Sara was in her room. She repeated, "If he wasn't coming to see me, this wouldn't have happened. Maybe it would have been better had I not told him I loved him. He wouldn't have been in a hurry." Sara's mom replied to that by saying, " It's no one's fault Sara. Things like this can happen to anyone at anytime. Life is like that. But I can assure you his mom said he's OK. When he got hit by the driver in the other car, he hit his head. It was a mild concussion. You'll be able to see him tomorrow. He'll heal fast from what the doctors told his mom, Sara." "But he still got hurt!" Sara was worried, and her mom couldn't get her to relax. That night she barely slept. The next day when she walked into his hospital room, he was awake. There was a bandage on his forehead, and stitches on his upper lip. He looked overjoyed and pained to see her, since smiling was hard for him at the moment. He got out, " I I I dreamt about you last night." Sara replied, "What was the dream about?" "In the dream we were in a meadow and you were running towards me. You looked beautiful with your long hair in the breeze. When you reached me you had a ring on your finger. It was a diamond. My finger had a simple gold band. I think we were married, Sara." He looked fond on remembering it. Alec pushed her hair out of her eyes," I want to be married to you someday when the time is right". Sara replied, " I couldn't love anyone as much as I love you." She took his face in her hands and asked, " Are you OK?" "Yes", he said, "I want to get out of here and go somewhere with you, but the nurses say I have to stay one more day". Sara said, "As long as your healing, that is OK. Do you want to go to the state fair when you get out. It's this weekend." " I would love to," he said, "If I get to spend time with you, it's a blessing". A nurse came in after that to check in on him. She measured his blood pressure, and listened to his heart with a stethoscope. "It's a miracle nothing worse happened, that was a pretty bad accident. I think you have an angel on you side, Alec." Alec grinned, "She's my angel; she's all I want in this life". Sara teared up when he said this. The nurse smiled at her. Her name was Liz. Thats what her name tag said in bold letters. As Sara left she vowed she'd come back when he was discharged the next day. With that, she was thankful that he'd been spared. God wasn't going to let her lose him. He had yet more time to spend with her. But she had to savor every moment with him. He was hers, and she was his. Death could not seperate them right now, and maybe never would. She prayed to the Lord for him when she got home. She hugged her pillow and imagined what their next meeting would be like. She ended up having a dream that night. In it she and him were holding hands, and he was pushing her on a swing, as she looked up and saw a rainbow above them. It made her happy. He was the "One" for her; always!
